GEDENKVERANSTALTUNG FÜR GÜNTER GRASS


On 10 May 2015, around 900 friends and companions from the fields of culture, media, politics and business bid farewell to Günter Grass at a memorial service in the Theater Lübeck. At the subsequent reception in the Museum Garden, Federal President Joachim Gauck described the commemorative event as a "total work of art".

The publication shows impressive photos of the event at Theater Lübeck and the Günter Grass House and makes the speeches and contributions of John Irving, Mario Adorf, Helene Grass, the Minister of State for Culture and Media Prof. Monika Grütters, Mayor Bernd Saxe and many others accessible. In his very personal commemorative speech, the friend and writer colleague John Irving reminded us of a character from the novel "The Tin Drum": "Once upon a time there was a toy trader, his name was Markus and he took all the toys from this world with him," it says. "I know how Oskar feels. Günter Grass was the king of the toy dealers. Now he has left us and taken all the toys from this world."

The exhibition shows the artist from his lesser known lyrical side and takes a look behind the grand gesture of the "painter prince". For the exhibition, Lüpertz had written poems on the walls of the Grass-Haus himself on the themes of war, love, death and art, which corresponded with previously unpublished drawings and smaller plaster cultures in the room. In addition to large-format illustrations, the catalogue contains an introduction to the exhibition, numerous poems by Lüpertz and a conversation between the artist and curator Tatjana Dübbel.
