»PICTURES OF INDIA«

07/10/2022-15/2/2023

»Those who travel to India prepare themselves«, writes Günter Grass about the land of contrasts. For the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the subcontinent with its thousands of years of history and culture stands as an example of the far-reaching consequences of globalisation. At the same time, India has been an exotic place of longing for many Germans for generations and a travel destination in search of alternative lifestyles. The multi-layered reception of India in the pictorial and literary work of Günter Grass forms the central theme of the exhibition »Images of India from Mother Teresa to Günter Grass«. In cooperation with the Ethnological Collection of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, the exhibition will focus on the historical reception of India in the 19th and 20th centuries, starting with Günter Grass, and show which ideas still shape the image of India in Europe today.
